Trained in Weimar, Christian Rohlfs began with naturalist painting before gradually simplifying shapes and colors. His installation in Hagen in 1901, in contact with Karl Ernst Osthaus and the Folkwang Museum, opened him up to modern research and expressionism. From the 1900s, landscapes of Soest, flowers, houses, biblical figures and views of Ticino were constructed in large masses, moving contours and transparencies.
