Founded under the sign of love and peace, the Hiroshima Museum of Art brings together modern French painting, Western Japanese art and nihonga in the heart of the city's central park.
The Hiroshima Museum of Art opened on November 3, 1978 at the initiative of Hiroshima Bank, which was celebrating its centenary. After more than ten years of preparation, the institution adopted the theme "For Love and Peace", in homage to the victims of the atomic bomb and the reconstruction of Hiroshima as a city of peace and culture. Its main circular building evokes the dome of the Atomic Bomb, while the galleries surrounding it recall the corridors of Itsukushima Shrine.
