1853 -1911 · Wilmington, Philadelphia and the golden age of American illustration
Howard Pyle was born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1853. After artistic training in Philadelphia, he began his career in New York in 1876 then returned to set up his studio in Wilmington in 1879. The rise of the press and publishing illustrated offers him exceptional terrain: for three decades, he produced more than three thousand images for books and major periodicals. Pirates, knights, episodes of the American Revolution and medieval adventures immediately became readable through composition, lighting and the expressiveness of gestures. Pyle also wrote his own stories, notably The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and the Arthurian cycles, which he designed text, typography and images as a whole. He not only seeks the accuracy of a costume: he asks the illustrator to mentally experience the scene in order to convey his emotion. This method also establishes his teaching. From 1894, he led an illustration class at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, opened a summer school in Chadds Ford in 1898 then his own school in Wilmington in 1900. NC Wyeth, Jessie Willcox Smith, Frank Schoonover and several generations of artists extended this requirement within what we would call the Brandywine school. In Then Sire Edward Sung, the story is based on pose, costume, proximity to figures and silence which seems to precede the voice. In My Hatred for Him suddenly seemed to have taken wings, the dramatic face-to-face condenses an entire story into a gesture. Pyle went to study mural painting in Italy in 1910 and died in Florence the following year. His influence remains visible in illustration, adventure cinema and animation. The "Howard Pyle" selection notably compares So sang Sire Edward and My hatred for him suddenly seemed to have taken wings. His reading favors the material.
For Pyle, the illustration does not comment on the story: it chooses the decisive moment, the one where light, gesture and silence make us believe that the story continues outside the frame.
