1733 -1808 · Paris, Rome and imagination of ruins
Hubert Robert was born in Paris in 1733 and first received training from the sculptor Michelangelo Slodtz. He left for Rome in 1754 with the future Duke of Choiseul and obtained a place at the French Academy. For more than a decade, he designed ancient monuments, gardens, quarries and daily scenes, frequented Fragonard and encountered the decisive influence of Pannini and Piranesi. Returning to Paris in 1765, he was admitted to the Royal Academy the following year as an architectural painter. His success earned him the nickname Robert des Ruines. His whims combined real fragments, displaced monuments, vegetation and small figures to transform Antiquity into the poetic theater of time. However, it is not limited to Roman remains. Designer of the King's Gardens, guard of royal paintings then actor of the future Louvre, he imagines gardens, decorations and exhibition spaces. The Development Project for the Grande Galerie du Louvre reflects his reflection on overhead light and circulation. Its counterpart, View of the Grand Gallery in ruins, exhibited in 1796 the same place that had become a vestige: the future of the museum and its possible disappearance coexist. The interior of the Colosseum transformed ancient architecture into an inhabited scene in 1796 where the human scale makes the mass of the monument perceptible. The interior of the Colosseum transforms ancient architecture into an inhabited scene where the human scale makes the mass of the monument perceptible. The Fire of the Opera at the Palais-Royal sets a contemporary event through the violence of light and presence of witnesses. Arrested in 1793 during the Terror, Robert spent ten months in prison and continued to draw. Released after the fall of Robespierre, he participated in the organization of the Central Museum of Arts and became curator of the future Louvre. Until his death in 1808, he combined observation, invention and historical awareness. Its ruins not only celebrate the past: they question the fragility of any present monument. The "Hubert Robert" selection not only celebrates the past: they question the fragility of any monument present. The "Hubert Robert" selection notably compares the development project of the Grande Galerie du Louvre and the view of the Grande Galerie du Louvre in ruins. His reading favors light.
Robert looks at each architecture in two stages: that of its use and that of its disappearance. It is in this gap that the poetry of its ruins is born.
