Hubert van Eyck's life remains much less documented than that of his brother Jan. Probably born around 1366 in the Maaseik region, he is attested in Ghent at the beginning of the 15th century and died in this city in 1426. His name is inseparable from the polyptych of the Adoration of the Mystical Lamb intended for the chapel of Joos Vijd and Elisabeth Borluut in the church of Saint-Jean, today Saint-Bavon Cathedral. An ancient inscription on the frame, made famous by a chronogram, states that Hubert, described as the greatest painter, began the work and that Jan, second in art, completed it in 1432. The exact meaning of this formulation, the material authenticity of all its parts and the the distribution of work between the two brothers has sparked centuries of debate. The restoration and scientific imaging campaigns carried out by the Royal Institute of Artistic Heritage have renewed knowledge of the pictorial layers, underlying drawings and repaintings, without definitively resolving each attribution. It is therefore necessary to approach Adam, the musical Angels, the prophet Zechariah, the angel of the Annunciation and the central panel of the Lamb as elements of a whole designed and executed in a complex workshop, traditionally associated with Hubert and Jan. The work is distinguished by the unification of multiple panels, the precision of the materials, the continuous light, symbolic space and an observation of the visible world which gives the sacred a new physical presence. The landscape of the central panel combines botany, architecture and atmospheric horizon; the life-size figures of the upper register impose a monumental presence; angels, fabrics, instruments and precious stones demonstrate an extraordinary mastery of oil painting on panel. Hubert thus remains an essential but partially veiled historical figure, who must be presented with the caution required by the state of research.
