1851 -1937 · Austria, Vienna and atmospheric landscape painting
Hugo Darnaut was born in Dessau in 1851 under the name Hugo Fix, son of the court actor Michael Fix, known as Darnaut. He grew up in Graz then moved to Vienna, where he began as an apprentice to the theater painter Heinrich Burghart. This decorative training gave him a taste for readable spaces and lighting effects. In 1871 and 1872, he studied landscape at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels. A scholarship then took him to Düsseldorf, then a major center of German landscape, where he worked with Andreas Achenbach, Robert Meyerheim and Johannes Wortmann. Back in Vienna, he joined the Künstlerhaus in 1877 and attended Tina Blau, Robert Russ and Emil Jakob Schindler. Everyone shares an interest in Stimmungsmalerei, or atmospheric painting, which seeks less spectacular effect than the agreement between motif, time, air and color. In the 1890s, Darnaut completed his training with Gustav Schönleber in Karlsruhe. After Schindler's death, he rented Plankenberg Castle, in the Vienna Woods, from 1893 to 1912, and continued teaching landscape there. Motiv bei Plankenberg directly bears the memory of this artistic home. Forest paths, rivers, meadows and horizons are ordered by muffled values and a light that envelops shapes. His travels and motifs extend to Lower and Upper Austria, in Tyrol, around Dachau and the Carpathians. Motif of Tyrol near the Achensee opens the landscape towards alpine scale, while Abendlandschaft Etzenhausen bei Dachau favors the evening transition. In Forest Scene with Deer, the animals integrate to the rhythm of the trunks and clearings rather than a hunting story. President of the Künstlerhaus from 1913 to 1918 and widely recognized during his lifetime, Darnaut continued to paint until his death in Vienna in 1937. The "Hugo Darnaut" selection notably compares Motif du Tyrol near the Achensee and Motiv bei Plankenberg. His reading favors figures.
Darnaut does not seek the storm of the romantic landscape: he observes the moment when air, humidity and light give an ordinary place its own tone.
