Abraham van Beijeren, also spelled Van Beyeren, was born in The Hague around 1620 or 1621. Son of a glazier, he was mentioned in 1636 as a student of Tymen Cracht. After a stint in Leiden, he became a master painter in The Hague in 1640. His first works were seascapes: sailboats, estuaries and gray seas revealed the influence of Jan van Goyen. This experience of water and reflections soon nourished his second specialty, the still life of fish. Carps, herring, rays and crustaceans are arranged with an almost monumental scale; a few soft touches are enough to convey the humidity of the scales, the weight of the bodies and the cold light of the market. From the 1650s, Van Beijeren develops sumptuous pronkstillevens. It brings together silverware, glassware, porcelain, fruit, bread, peeled lemon, watch, lobster and precious fabrics. Unlike painters who seek an invisible finish, it lets the touch breathe. A reflection on an ewer or a glass is constructed by rapid gestures, sometimes free enough to announce a much later sensitivity. In Banquet, silverware orders a complex depth and reflects the world of the workshop. Wealth, however, remains crossed by fragility: cut fruit, overturned glass and reminds us of the passage of time. The painter experiences financial difficulties all his life. He participates in the foundation of the Pictura Brotherhood in 1656, but debts led to sales and travel. He worked successively in Delft, The Hague, Amsterdam, Alkmaar, Gouda then Overschie. In 1689, fifty-four paintings were still sold to settle his creditors. He probably died at the beginning of 1690. Little recognized during his lifetime for this free manner, Van Beijeren is today admired precisely for her: his luxurious objects are never fixed, because metal, flesh, glass and light still seem to be forming under the brush. The selection "Abraham van Beijeren" compares Banquet and Still Life with Lobster and Fruit. Its reading favors space.
Van Beijeren paints luxury without cooling it: lobster, silver, glass and fruit remain crossed by the gesture that makes them appear.
