Born in Valencia in 1849 in a modest environment, Ignasi Pinazo I Camarlench worked at a very young age as a goldsmith, gilder, tile painter and fan decorator. Entering the Academy of San Carlos in 1864, he traveled to Italy in 1873 and discovered an outdoor painting close to the macchiaioli's research. A pension in Rome obtained in 1876 initially directed him towards history painting, but his personal language was built mainly in portraiture, family intimacy, landscape and direct study.
