Jacob Ochtervelt was born in Rotterdam in 1634. He trained in Haarlem with Nicolaes Berchem, in the same environment as Pieter de Hooch, then worked in Rotterdam from the mid-1650s. His specialty is the refined genre scene: women reading a letter, musicians, children, servants and visitors occupy wealthy houses whose decor is described with precision. Ochtervelt frequently uses the door or vestibule to contrast the protected space of the interior with the world of the street. Around 1674, he moved to Amsterdam frequently, where he died in 1682.
