1582 -1647 · Antwerp, Flemish still life and botanical precision
Jacob van Hulsdonck was born in Antwerp in 1582 and received part of his training in Middelburg, in the midst of the flower painter Ambrosius Bosschaert. Returning to Antwerp, he became master of the guild of Saint Luke in 1608. Van Hulsdonck specialized in still life: bowls of strawberries, baskets of fruit, plums, grapes, lemons, flowers and tables loaded with food. The objects are often isolated in front of a dark background, which reinforces their color and the sharpness of their contours. Stained leaves, imperfect fruits, insects and drops of water demonstrate careful observation of living things. At the same time, imported porcelain and various foods evoke commercial networks from Antwerp. Died in 1647, Van Hulsdonck also passed on his profession to his son Gillis, active in turn as a still life painter. The "Jacob van Hulsdonck" selection notably compares Still life: a basket of grapes and other fruits - Jacob van Hulsdonck. His reading favors space.
Van Hulsdonck makes each fruit unique: skin, reflection, maturity and imperfection become the real events of the painting.
