The origins and training of Jacopo de' Barbari remain poorly documented. Probably born in Venice between 1460 and 1470, he appears as an already accomplished artist around 1500. That year his spectacular View of Venice appeared, an immense wood engraving composed of several sheets. The city is observed from an imaginary aerial point with exceptional topographical precision and technical ambition. Signed by a caduceus, his prints and several of his paintings combine humanist culture, Venetian forms and curiosity for northern innovations. In 1500, Jacopo left Venice to work in Nuremberg in the service of Emperor Maximilian I. He frequented the middle of Albrecht Dürer and contributes to discussions on human proportion, engraving and the intellectual status of the artist. He then passed through different German courts before joining the Netherlands in the service of the Habsburg court. His religious paintings are characterized by slender figures, meditative gentleness and landscapes which bring Nordic depth and Venetian light into dialogue. The Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist and Saint Anthony the Abbot, known as The Virgin at the Fountain, unites intimate devotion, supple symmetry and natural details. Jacopo is also famous for a small Still Life with a partridge and gauntlets, often considered one of the first autonomous trompe l'oeil since Antiquity: the objects seem to hang in front of the real wall. Died before 1516, he left a relatively small corpus but of considerable scope. Painter, engraver and image designer, he transformed his roaming into a laboratory between Venice, Empire and the Netherlands. The "Jacopo de' Barbari" selection, he transformed his roaming into a laboratory between Venice, Empire and the Netherlands. The "Jacopo de' Barbari" selection notably features The Virgin at the Fountain. His reading favors drawing.
De' Barbari crosses borders as he crosses genres: the city becomes a total image, the object deceives the eye and devotion unites Venice to the North.
