Born in Brussels in 1568, Jan Brueghel the Elder is the son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. After a long stay in Italy, he returned to Antwerp in 1596 and developed an exceptional career with collectors, the court of Archdukes Albert and Isabella and Cardinal Federico Borromeo. Nicknamed Brueghel of Velvet, Brueghel of Flowers or Brueghel of Paradise, he excelled in landscape, floral still life, allegory, infernal scenes and paradises populated by animals. His tiny touch renders foliage, jewelry, petals and characters with precious precision. He frequently collaborates with other masters, notably Pierre Paul Rubens, who paints the large figures while Brueghel builds landscapes, animals and objects.
