Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen was born around 1500 in Beverwijk and died in Brussels in 1559. His training remains debated, but his work reveals a deep knowledge of Nordic portraiture and a new attention to Italian models. Towards the end of the 1520s, he worked at the court of Margaret of Austria in Mechelen, then in the service of Mary of Hungary. Portraits, drawings and official commissions placed him in direct contact with Habsburg power. Called to Spain by Charles V, he accompanied the imperial expedition against Tunis in 1535. Called to Spain by Charles V, he accompanied the imperial expedition against Tunis in 1535. He observed cities, battles, landscapes, costumes and ceremonies in order to preserve a precise visual memory. These studies nourish prints and especially the boxes of the twelve tapestries of The Conquest of Tunis, commissioned by Mary of Hungary in 1546 and woven in Brussels by Willem de Pannemaker's workshop. The monumental scale of this cycle makes Vermeyen both a reporter, a director of history and a master of textile decoration. His stay in the Mediterranean world and his knowledge of Italy also enrich his religious painting. Saint Jerome meditating focuses the eye on an elderly body, the book and the skull. The meditating figure in the Mediterranean world also concentrates the gaze on an elderly body, the book and the skull. The half-body figure, the expressive hands and the tight light also transform the saint's erudition into an interior experience. Vermeyen finally practices etching with remarkable freedom. His art thus connects the intimacy of a face to the immense political theater of the empire. The "Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen" selection notably compares Saint Jerome meditating. His reading favors figures.
Vermeyen knows how to look at two scales: the silent hand of a saint and the movement of an army also become historical documents.
