Jan Cossiers was born in Antwerp in 1600. He received his first lessons from his father Antoon, then trained with Cornelis de Vos. His trip to the South quickly broadened his horizons: he stayed in Aix-en-Provence with Abraham de Vries in 1623, passed through Rome in 1624, then returned to Aix, where the humanist Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc introduced him into an international network and recommended him to Rubens. Back in Antwerp, Cossiers became master of the guild of Saint-Luc in 1628 or 1629. His first genre scenes showed smokers, drinkers, players and fortune tellers enlightened by a single source. Their proximity, their gestures and the strong contrasts reflect his knowledge of caravagismo. Ecce Homo or Pilate presenting Christ to the people, painted towards the beginning of his career, still belongs to a phase where the Mannerist heritage encounters a new dramatic concentration. The opposition between richly dressed Pilate and the vulnerable Christ makes the story immediately readable, while the close format favors personal devotion. Cossiers then collaborated with Rubens for the Joyful Entry of Cardinal Infante Ferdinand in 1635 and painted mythological subjects based on his models for the Torre de la Parada. After Rubens' death in 1640, he became one of Antwerp's important religious painters, author of altarpieces, biblical scenes, portraits and drawings. Its color softens, emotion gains restraint and the figures dialogue through looks as much as gestures. Died in Antwerp in 1671, Cossiers occupies a singular place between Caravaggesque naturalism, Rubenian culture and an intimate sense of sacred narrative.
