1606 -1683/84 · Utrecht and Antwerp, sumptuous still life
Born in Utrecht in 1606, Jan Davidsz. de Heem first worked in Leiden, where his tonal still lifes brought together books, instruments and objects linked to vanity. His installation in Antwerp in the 1630s profoundly transformed his painting. Through contact with Flemish tradition and artists like Daniel Seghers, the compositions grew, the color was enriched and the table became a theater of abundance: fruits, flowers, oysters, lobsters, nautiluses, draperies and pieces of goldsmithing respond to this. De Heem then spent several periods in Utrecht before returning to Antwerp. Admired for his ability to differentiate materials, he then painted several periods in Utrecht before returning to Antwerp. Admired for his ability to differentiate materials, he then painted small cabinet paintings as well as vast banquets. Every detail offers immediate visual pleasure, but butterfly, opened lemon, fragile glass or ripe fruit remind us that all splendor is transformed. His workshop and his family, notably Cornelis and Jan II de Heem, continue a major influence on European still life. The selection "Jan Davidsz. de Heem" notably compares Still Life: Banquet Scene and Still Life with a Glass and Oysters. His reading favors drawing.
De Heem paints abundance at its point of balance: every object shines, but every ripe fruit already announces the passage of time.
