Utrecht, 1606 - Antwerp, 1684 · Abundance, illusion and symbolism of life
Jan Davidsz de Heem is one of the major masters of European still life. Born in Utrecht in 1606, he worked in Leiden from 1626, where his first tonal vanities brought together books, instruments, skulls and hourglasses. In 1635, he moved to Antwerp and joined the guild of Saint-Luc. Contact with Daniel Seghers and the great Flemish tradition then transformed his language: bouquets, garlands, fruits, glassware, goldsmithing, shells, insects and draperies made up sumptuous ensembles. De Heem then circulated between Antwerp and Utrecht, lastingly linking the two pictorial cultures. His Still Life shows this synthesis. Illusionist precision distinguishes skin from fruit, transparency of glass, shine of metal and rib of a leaf; However, the whole remains governed by a complex rhythm of curves, diagonals and colors. Abundance does not exclude fragility. Ripe fruit, cut flower, thin glass and insect evoke the passage of time at the very heart of visual pleasure. Admired for its ability to paint gold and silver, De Heem forms or influences the passage of time at the very heart of visual pleasure. Admired for its ability to paint gold and silver, De Heem trains or influences numerous artists, including Abraham Mignon, Joris van Son and Andries Benedetti. The selection "Jan Davidszoon de Heem" notably compares Still Life.. His reading favors movement.
De Heem makes each matter irresistibly real, then brings together these fragile wonders to remind us that abundance itself belongs to time.
