Jan Dirksz. Both was born in Utrecht around 1618 and died there in 1652. Trained in a city where history painting and landscape occupy a major place, he left for Italy at a young age with his brother Andries. The two artists stayed in Rome at the end of the 1630s and the beginning of the 1640s. Jan focused on the landscape while Andries often painted the figures; their collaboration thus combines bright space and small scenes of popular life. The Roman countryside, its reliefs, its roads, its lakes and its low light definitively mark Jan Both. After the accidental death of his brother in Venice, he returned to Utrecht. However, he never stopped painting Italy: he did reconstructed from memory for Dutch collectors. His compositions can be recognized by a golden light which crosses the trees, hits a path or a slope and cools in the distant blue. The dark foreground acts as a threshold, then travelers, mule drivers or designers lead the gaze towards the valley. The elegant Travelers gives a worldly presence to this route; Italian landscape with designer introduces the artist into the landscape and reflects on the observation itself; Italian landscape with mule drivers places daily work in a pastoral ideal. Both also creates drawings and etchings, and his inventions circulate widely. With Claude Lorrain, Herman van Swanevelt and the other Nordic painters of Rome, he helped define a landscape where light organizes both emotion and depth. His career was brief, but his influence on Dutch and English landscapers remained considerable. The "Jan Both" selection notably compares The Elegant Travelers and Italian Landscape with Designer. His reading favors details.
For Both, light is a path: it crosses the shadows, touches travelers and transforms the Italian countryside into a horizon of desire.
