Jan Philips van Thielen was born in Mechelen in 1618 and specialized in flowers and garlands. He first trained for a while with Theodoor Rombouts, then became a student of Daniel Seghers, the Jesuit grand master of floral cartouching. Van Thielen joined the guild of Saint Luke of Antwerp as master in 1641 -1642 and joined that of Mechelen from 1660. He regularly collaborated with figure painters, notably Erasmus Quellin, who executed the central image while he painted flowers, foliage and illusionist frames. Saint Philip in a niche surrounded by flowers, dated 1651 and painted on copper, is one of his masterpieces. The saint occupies an architecture feint; around it, petals and leaves form a regular halo. Compared to Seghers' more spontaneous garlands, Van Thielen's isolate each flower more, sometimes harden the color and order the elements according to a more stable construction. Precision does not prevent the freedom of the touch, particularly visible in the petals. The work has had several versions and circulated in major Spanish collections.
