Jan Fyt was born in Antwerp in 1611. He began his training at a very young age with Hans van den Berch, then joined the workshop of Frans Snyders, grand master of animals and hunting tables. Received master of the guild of Saint-Luc around 1629 or 1630, he continued for some time to work in the orbit of Snyders before undertaking a journey which profoundly enriched his painting. He stayed in Paris in 1633 -1634, then visited Italy, notably Naples, Florence and Genoa.
