Jan Massys was born in Antwerp around 1509, son of the painter Quentin Metsys. In the family workshop, he learned an art based on the precision of faces, the richness of materials and the moral force of the story. His career changed in 1544 when he left Antwerp, forced into exile because of his religious convictions. His travels in France and Italy brought him closer to the Fontainebleau school and his taste for elongated bodies, artificial poses, ancient decorations and a skillfully codified sensuality. The dogs, servants, jewelry and architecture extend the meaning of the story into detail. Suzanne and the Old Men offer another image of threatened beauty: the light skin, the golden coat and the refined garden contrast with the insistent gestures of the two men. In Judith with Holofernes' head, the victorious heroine combines seduction, control and contained violence. Massys therefore does not present these women as simple decorative pretexts. Massys therefore does not present these women as simple decorative pretexts. The spectator is placed in front of a tension between desire, virtue, power and moral judgment. Its clear contours, its colors vibrant and its differences in scale create a deliberately artificial world. Died in Antwerp around 1575, he played a major role in the introduction of French and Italian mannerism into the painting of the Southern Netherlands. The "Jan Massys" selection notably compares David and Bathsheba and Judith with the head of Holofernes. His reading favors composition.
Massys transforms beauty into a test of the gaze: elegance attracts, the story accuses and every detail forces the viewer to choose their place.
