Jan Miense Molenaer was born in Haarlem around 1610 into a tailor's family. His first dated paintings appeared at the end of the 1620s and showed a proximity to Frans Hals or Dirck Hals: warm palette, lively gestures, close figures and scenes of rejoicing. Registered in the community of the guild of Saint-Luc, he quickly developed a very broad repertoire: joyful companies, taverns, musicians, peasants, biblical scenes, allegories of the senses, theater and portraits. In 1636, he married Judith Leyster, an independent artist already recognized in Haarlem. In 1636, he married Judith Leyster, an independent artist already recognized in Haarlem. The couple moved to Amsterdam the following year, attracted by a dynamic art market. They shared models and accessories and probably certain workshop practices, which sometimes complicated the attributions. Molenaer is distinguished by his ability to convey the relationships between characters. A sideways glance, a hand placed on an instrument or a distance between two bodies is enough to convey complicity, desire, mockery or conflict. Pastoral scene: Granida and Daifilo adapt a famous literary episode to the tastes of Dutch theater. Princess Granida meets the shepherd Daifilo; pastoral costume, landscape and exchange of glances transform the love story into a scene of rustic elegance. After twelve years in Amsterdam, Molenaer and Leyster settled around 1648 in Heemstede, near Haarlem. Her production remains abundant despite financial difficulties and unfortunate real estate investments. After Leyster's death in 1660, he returned to Haarlem, where he died in 1668. His work retained the social vitality of the Dutch Golden Age while exploring literary and moral subjects more varied than one might suppose. The "Jan Miense Molenaer" selection notably compares Granida and Daifilo. His reading favors details.
Molenaer paints less of an action than a relationship: in each shared gaze or instrument, the scene reveals what unites or separates the characters.
