Jan Miense Molenaer was born in Haarlem around 1610 into a tailor's family. His first dated paintings appeared at the end of the 1620s and showed a proximity to Frans Hals or Dirck Hals: warm palette, lively gestures, close figures and scenes of rejoicing. Registered in the community of the guild of Saint-Luc, he quickly developed a very broad repertoire: joyful companies, taverns, musicians, peasants, biblical scenes, allegories of the senses, theater and portraits. They shared models and accessories and probably certain workshop practices, which sometimes complicated the attributions. Molenaer is distinguished by his ability to convey the relationships between characters. His work retained the social vitality of the Dutch Golden Age while exploring literary and moral subjects more varied than one might suppose.
