Jan Porcellis frees the navy from the spectacular narrative to make the sea, the wind and the sky the real subjects of the painting.
Born in Ghent around 1584 into a Protestant family taking refuge in the Netherlands, Jan Porcellis worked successively in Rotterdam, Antwerp, Haarlem, Amsterdam and near Leiden. His beginnings remained linked to the printmaking and maritime tradition of Hendrick Vroom, but he radically transformed the genre in the 1620s. Instead of brilliant naval battles or meticulously aligned ships, he painted modest boats facing a gray sea under an immense sky. The reduced palette of browns, greens and grays unifies air and water; a few accents of sail or foam are enough to convey the force of the wind. This tonal navy favors atmospheric experience and human vulnerability. Much admired during his lifetime, Porcellis was collected by Rembrandt, Rubens and Jan van de Cappelle.
