Born in Amsterdam in 1624 or 1626 into a prosperous family of dyers, Jan van de Cappelle did not need to make a living from his painting. He trained mainly by studying the works of masters like Simon de Vlieger and Jan Porcellis, whom he collected with passion. His seascapes favor estuaries and calm waters: sailboats, ceremonial yachts and small boats seem suspended under an immense sky, crossed by luminous bands. The subject is not the naval event but the agreement between air, water and sail. Van de Cappelle also paints around forty winter landscapes, where ice, trees and silhouettes extend the same sense of silent atmosphere.
