1637 -1712 · Gorinchem, Amsterdam and cities of Europe
Jan van der Heyden was born in Gorinchem in 1637 and moved with his family to Amsterdam around 1650. Trained according to tradition with a glass painter, he developed a technical patience very early on which marked all his work. His urban paintings seem almost documentary accurate: brick joints, windows, cornices, trees and reflections are rendered with exceptional precision. However, Van der Heyden does not passively copy the place. He moves a building, widens a square or combines several monuments in order to obtain a more harmonious space. The Dam with the new town hall in Amsterdam shows this alliance between observation and construction. The Herengracht transforms the canal into a calm rhythm of facades, trees and light. The Old Palace in Brussels preserves the memory of the Coudenberg, while the Huis ten Bosch in The Hague combines princely architecture and an orderly garden. The small figures, sometimes entrusted to collaborators like Adriaen van de Velde, give human scale and enliven the city without diverting attention from architecture. Van der Heyden's career goes far beyond painting. Appointed head of public lighting in Amsterdam in 1670, he designed a more efficient lantern system. With his brother Nicolaes, he also perfected a fire pump and hose that transformed fire fighting; her Brandspuitboek from 1690 explains these innovations through texts and engravings. This dual activity as an artist and inventor enlightens his gaze: the city is for him a visible form, but also an organism to be protected and improved. Died in Amsterdam in 1712, he left real and imaginary views whose clarity would have a lasting influence on European architectural painting. The "Jan van der Heyden" selection notably compares Le Huis ten Bosch in The Hague and Le Vieux-Palais in Brussels. His reading favors movement.
Van der Heyden paints the city as he invents it: every brick is observed, every light calculated and every perspective reorganized to make the space more intelligible.
