1596 -1656 · Leiden, Haarlem and The Hague
Jan van Goyen was born in Leiden in 1596 into a family of artisans. His training went through several masters before a decisive stay in Haarlem in 1617 -1618 with Esaias van de Velde. Back in Leiden, he developed a still colorful landscape, then gradually reduced his palette around browns, ochres, grays and greens. This chromatic economy does not simplify the world: it unifies air, water and earth in a continuous atmosphere. Installed in The Hague in 1632, Van Goyen became an important figure in the guild and traveled the United Provinces filling bank books, towers, villages, roads and boats. View of Haarlem and the Haarlemmer Meer places the city under a sky which occupies most of the canvas. The Meuse in Dordrecht with the Grote Kerk transforms the river into a traffic scene where sail, cloud and reflection respond to each other. Beach near Egmond favors the low horizon, the wind and the modest activity of the shore. In the View of Nijmegen, the mass of the Valkhof dominates the Waal without erasing boats and travelers. Van Goyen quickly works on clear preparations and uses a vocabulary of soft touches which suggests more than he describes. However, his landscapes are not improvised and uses a vocabulary of supple touches which suggests more than he describes. His landscapes are not, however, improvised: the drawings taken from the motif are recomposed in the workshop along carefully distributed diagonals, masses and accents. He also paints winters, dunes, farms and panoramic towns. Died in The Hague in 1656, he left a considerable production which renewed the view of ordinary territory and had a lasting influence on landscape painting in the Netherlands. The "Jan van Goyen" selection notably compares View of Haarlem and Haarlemmer Meer and Beach near Egmond. His reading favors the material.
Van Goyen gives the sky the first voice: under its changing light, a boat, a tower or a bank is enough to make the daily territory an immense landscape.
