Born around 1572, probably in Culemborg, Jan Anthonisz van Ravesteyn appeared in the Delft archives in 1597 before joining the guild of Saint Luke in The Hague in 1598. He remained in this city throughout his career and became one of the sought-after portraitists of the stadtholder's court.
