Born around 1572, probably in Culemborg, Jan Anthonisz van Ravesteyn appeared in the Delft archives in 1597 before joining the guild of Saint Luke in The Hague in 1598. He remained in this city throughout his career and became one of the sought-after portraitists of the stadtholder's court. Princes of Nassau, officers, magistrates, women and children pose in front of sober backgrounds that focus attention on the face, hands and quality of the costume. Princes of Nassau, officers, magistrates, women and children pose in front of sober backgrounds that focus attention on the face, hands and quality of the costume. His language owes much to the portrait of Michiel van Mierevelt, but Ravesteyn often gives his models a softness of light and a more mobile presence. Lace, satin, pearls and armor are described precisely without divert individual character. To respond to large orders for dynastic or military series, he led a workshop capable of maintaining a strong unity of presentation. The "Jan van Ravesteyn" selection notably compares Portrait of a Woman. His reading favors color.
Ravesteyn makes the costume a social setting, but gives the face the freedom to reveal a more personal presence.
