1495 -1562 · Utrecht, Rome and Italianate Renaissance
Born in Schoorl in 1495, Jan van Scorel received initial training in the Netherlands before undertaking an exceptional trip in 1519. Cologne, Nuremberg, Austria, Venice and the Holy Land marked a journey which ultimately led him to Rome. There he studied Antiquity, Raphael and Michelangelo, then in 1522 became curator of the pontifical collection of the Belvedere to Pope Adrian VI. Returning to Utrecht in 1524, he brought a new language: monumental figures, nudes, classical draperies and idealized landscapes transformed the altarpiece and the portrait of the North. Several of his religious groups disappeared during the iconoclasm of 1566, but his role in the diffusion of Romanism remained decisive. Van Scorel returns from Italy with more than motifs: he transforms the very way of constructing the body, space and landscape of the North.
