Jan Verkade moves from the colorful synthesis of the Nabis to a monumental religious art, guided by the search for a spiritual and ordered form.
Born in Zaandam in 1868 into a family of industrialists, Jan Verkade left the Netherlands for Paris in 1891. He met Paul Sérusier, Gauguin and the circle of Nabis, whose refusal of naturalism and taste for flat areas, contours and expressive color. His Breton landscapes reduce trees, fields and paths to simple rhythms. This pictorial renewal accompanies an increasingly intense spiritual search. Converted to Catholicism, Verkade entered the Benedictine abbey of Beuron and took the name Willibrord. There he joined an art school which sought to unite geometry, hierarchy of forms and liturgy. Frescoes, religious decorations, writings and translations replace gradually the exhibition career.
