Jan Wijnants was born in Haarlem, probably in the 1630s, and his activity was documented as early as 1643. The city is located on the edge of a territory shaped by ancient sand dunes, sparse woods, pastures and winding paths. Wijnants makes this local landscape a personal repertoire, without looking for a topographical copy. He exaggerates a height, bends a path or opens a clearing in order to lead the gaze. Installed in Amsterdam around 1660, he exaggerated a height, curved a path or opened a clearing in order to lead the gaze. Installed in Amsterdam around 1660, he continued to paint these recomposed memories of Haarlem until his death in 1684. Edge of forest shows his sense of transition: shade of trees, light of the terrain and depth of the sky meet at the border between closed space and open countryside. Peasants' stop going to the market combines the rural journey with a resting scene where baskets, animals and figures give the place a social function. Like many Dutch landscapers, Wijnants collaborates with painters specializing in characters. Jan Lingelbach, Adriaen van de Velde or Philips Wouwerman can provide riders, peasants and herds, while Wijnants retains responsibility for the terrain, trees and light. Jan Lingelbach, Adriaen van de Velde or Philips Wouwerman can provide horsemen, peasants and herds, while Wijnants retains responsibility for the terrain, trees and light. His compositions are recognizable by their dead trunks, their sandy embankments, their curved paths and their contrasts of sun. They strongly influence artists like Wouwerman and, more late, English collectors of the 18th century. Wijnants thus transforms an ordinary landscape into a visual structure: each stone, stump and slope prepares a movement which leads from the foreground towards the horizon. The "Jan Wijnants" selection notably compares Peasants’ Stop going to the market and Forest Edge. His reading favors figures.
Wijnants builds the path before the traveler: the dune, the stump and the light already organize the story to which the figures then give a human scale.
