1585/1586 -1653 · Flemish landscape and large workshop of Rubens
Born and died in Antwerp, Jan Wildens trained with a painter named Verhulst before entering the guild of Saint-Luc in 1604. His first works reveal the influence of Jan Brueghel the Elder and a Flemish tradition attentive to the seasons, paths and rural activities. A stay in Italy then transformed his manner: the light warmed, the trees further structured the space and the landscape gained a decorative scale nourished by Paul Bril. Back in Antwerp, Wildens became one of Peter Paul Rubens' most important collaborators. He painted the backgrounds of many of the master's historical compositions, notably the Act of Devotion of Rudolf I of Habsburg, and also works with Jordaens, Snyders, Cornelis de Vos, Abraham Janssen, Gerard Seghers and Theodoor Rombouts. This collaboration does not reduce its autonomy. In Landscape with Shearers, dated 1613 -1616, the work of wool, sheep, trees, water and the village make up a rural cycle readable at several distances. The Spa Waters show another use of the territory: two men present a map of the spa to a couple, while visitors gather near the spring and receive cuts. Landscape with characters further favors the circulation of figures in a plant and atmospheric world. Wildens knows how to create paths visuals, from foreground gestures to distant villages. His landscapes, widely disseminated by the prints of Hendrick Hondius, Jacob Matham and Andries Stock, contribute to the European influence of the Flemish vision of nature. The "Jan Wildens" selection notably compares Landscape with Characters and Landscape with Shearers. His reading favors details.
Wildens never paints an empty setting: the path, the work and the conversation give the landscape its scale and its memory.
