Jean Changenet, often named Jean II Changenet to distinguish him from his father, belongs to a dynasty of painters linked to Dijon. He founded a powerful workshop in Avignon shortly after 1480 and was documented there from 1485 until his death at the beginning of 1495. The variety of his commissions and the number of his collaborators show that he occupied a major place between the generation of Nicolas Froment and that of Nicolas Dipre. His activity links Burgundy to Provence. He continued to work for Dijon sponsors while meeting the needs of churches, brotherhoods and notables in Avignon. His activity linked Burgundy to Provence. The following year, he welcomed the Spanish painter Juan de Nalda into his studio for three years of training. This circulation of men and models explains a composite style: monumentality inherited from Burgundian painting, precision of materials, clear light and Provençal sense of space. The tight figures, individualized gazes and speech bubbles suggest a fragment of a larger altarpiece, probably linked to a Jesse Tree. The panel shows how Changenet transforms scriptural characters in concrete presences, heavy with age, knowledge and expectation. A significant part of his work has disappeared, has been dispersed or remains discussed between the master, the studio and anonymous personalities. However, his legacy continues through his family and those around him. His daughter Michèle married Josse Lieferinxe, another major painter active in Provence, in 1503. Jean Changenet thus appears less as an isolated figure than as the center of an artistic house, capable of transmitting forms, models and know-how between several European regions.
