Jean Fouquet was born around 1420, probably in Tours, and became one of the most important painters and illuminators in 15th century France. His training remains poorly documented, but a stay in Italy in the 1440s is attested by his portrait of Pope Eugene IV, now lost. There he discovered the perspective, the monumentality of the Quattrocento and the spatial solutions of Fra Angelico or Piero della Francesca. Back in Tours, he associated these innovations with the precision of Flemish painters and the French tradition of illumination. Back in Tours, he associated these innovations with the precision of Flemish painters and the French tradition of illumination. The Portrait of Charles VII presents the king from the front, isolated behind a narrow opening and wrapped in red. The frontality gives the image a almost immobile authority, while the tired face retains exceptional psychological truth. Around 1452 -1458, Étienne Chevalier commissions the Diptych of Melun. The left panel, today in Berlin, shows the donor presented by Saint Stephen; the right panel, kept in Antwerp, represents the Virgin and Child surrounded by red and blue angels. The collection offers these two complementary dimensions: sponsor's prayer and celestial vision. The old frame bore the famous enamel self-portrait of Fouquet today at the Louvre, which acts as a signature of remarkable modernity. The Pietà de Nouans adopts a darker register: the body of Christ, the Virgin and the grieving figures stand out in a nocturnal space of great intensity. Fouquet also produced the Hours of Étienne Chevalier, the Grandes Chroniques de France and other manuscripts where cities, battles, ceremonies and sacred stories are organized with new precision. Mentioned as painter to King Louis XI in 1475, he died before 1481. His work establishes a lasting balance between portrait, devotion, narration and rational construction of space. The "Jean Fouquet" selection notably compares Charles VII, King of France and Diptych of Melun: Virgin and Child. His reading favors composition.
Fouquet unites three worlds: the truth of the Flemish face, the Italian perspective and the light of French illumination become a fully personal language.
