Jean-Victor Bertin was born in Paris in 1767. A student of Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, he adopted the principles of historical landscape: careful observation of nature, construction by successive plans and association of the real site with a classical culture. He exhibited regularly at the Salon from the end of the 18th century and traveled to Italy, where reliefs, ruins and light provided a lasting vocabulary.
