1745 -1802 · Danish portrait, nature and sensitivity
Born on the island of Funen in 1745, Jens Juel trained in Hamburg before studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. A long period of travel took him to Rome, Paris and Geneva, where he encountered different traditions of European portraiture and worked with an international clientele. Returning to Denmark in 1780, he became a court painter, professor and then director of the Academy. His vast gallery of portraits brought together the royal family, aristocrats, scholars, artists and bourgeois who shaped Danish society at the end of the 18th century. Juel often avoided the rigid pomp: a landscape, a garden or a soft light opened the space around the model, while the face and the hands reflect a specific personality. His own studies of nature and landscapes reveal the same attentive gaze, placed between Enlightenment and pre-romantic sensitivity. The "Jens Juel" selection offers its own journey on this subject. His reading favors atmosphere.
In Juel's portraits, social rank remains visible, but light and gaze first make a person.
