The Turner Bequest preserved by the Tate opens the painter's studio: completed oils, experimental paintings, watercolors, drawings and notebooks reveal the birth of his light.
When he died in 1851, JMW Turner bequeathed to the British nation the immense collection remaining in his studio. The Turner Bequest today forms the heart of the Tate's Turner collections, after the transfer of most of the legacy from the National Gallery at the beginning of the 20th century. This exceptional ensemble allows us to look beyond just the paintings exhibited by the artist.
