Joachim Beuckelaer was born in Antwerp in 1533. Nephew and student of Pieter Aertsen, he developed with him a type of image new in the Netherlands of the 16th century: the kitchen or the monumental market, where food, objects and sellers occupy the foreground while a religious episode sometimes appears in the distance. The Fish Market, painted in 1568, celebrates maritime abundance with a very structured accumulation of salmon, carp, herring and baskets. The precision of the species, the wet surfaces and the gestures of the merchants give the scene an almost modern immediacy. This profusion can also carry a moral warning against overeating or desire. Inside cooking, poultry, meat, vegetables, copper and ceramics transform domestic work into a spectacle of materials. The gaze oscillates between consumption, commerce and human narrative. The Crucifixion recalls that Beuckelaer also remains a religious painter capable of organizing a crowd and a landscape around sacred drama. His activity takes place during the confessional conflicts and iconoclasm of 1566, which disrupted the image market. At Beuckelaer, the material world advances to the edge of the painting: fish, copper and vegetables become as eloquent as figures and force the eye to choose between abundance and measure.
