Joaquin Clausell was born in Campeche in 1866. He studied law in Mexico, became a journalist and opposed the regime of Porfirio Diaz. His political activity earned him prison and then several exiles. In Paris in 1896, he directly discovered impressionism and new ways of painting light. Returning to Mexico, he led a career as a lawyer and painted largely outside institutions, encouraged by artists and friends like Gerardo Murillo, known as Dr. Atl. Clausell chose the landscape: Xochimilco, Iztacalco, Santa Anita, San Angel, the Fuentes Brotantes, the forests, rivers and coastline of Campeche. Late afternoon by the sea captures the moment when the light descends and redistributes colors and reflections. Landscape with forest and river brings the touch of water, foliage and air closer. In Spring Emerging in Autumn, the title itself suggests that nature is never a fixed season but a continuous transformation. Clausell often works on cardboard, with a quick paste, visible touches and juxtaposed colors. Its landscape is not only picturesque: it symbolically resists urbanization and seeks a lasting natural order. In his workshop installed in the former palace of the counts of Santiago de Calimaya, he also covers the walls with hundreds of small studies and spontaneous images. Died accidentally in 1935 in Lagunas de Zempoala, Clausell leaves a work long marginalized but today essential to the history of Mexican modernity. The "Joaquin Clausell" selection notably compares End of the Afternoon by the Sea and Landscape with Forest and River. His reading favors movement.
Clausell paints before the light changes: the quick touch retains a reflection, foliage or cloud while defending the moving freedom of the landscape.
