Joaquin Torres Garcia was born in Montevideo in 1874 into a family of Catalan origin. Installed in Barcelona in 1891, he trained in the city's schools and artistic circles, worked with Antoni Gaudí and created decorations nourished by Mediterranean Antiquity. Around 1917, modern life, the port and the city gradually replaced the classical ideal. After stays in New York and Italy, he settled in Paris in 1926.
