Johann Friedrich Overbeck was born in Lübeck in 1789 into a cultured family. Entering the Vienna Academy in 1806, he rejected with several classmates the teaching which he considered too mechanical. In 1809, with Franz Pforr and other young artists, he founded the Brotherhood of Saint Luke. The group wanted to restore moral and spiritual truth to painting by studying Dürer, Perugino, Raphael and the Italian primitives. Installed in Rome in 1810 in the former convent of Sant'Isidoro, these artists soon received the nickname Nazarenes because of their appearance and their Christian ideal. Overbeck converted to Catholicism in 1813 and remained in Rome until his death. The frescoes of the Casa Bartholdy, devoted to the story of Joseph, then those of the Villa Massimo, put collective mural painting back in the spotlight. Italy and Germany personify the desired union between Italian tradition and Germanic culture. The Annunciation and The Marriage of the Virgin favor clear outline, measured gestures, ordered space and local color.
