1704 -1761 · Eppan, Passau, Vienna and Austrian rococo
Johann Georg Platzer was born in Eppan, South Tyrol, in 1704 into a family of painters. After initial family training and a stint with an active uncle in Passau, he moved to Vienna, where his taste for history scenes, sumptuous architecture and small formats found a clientele of collectors. Platzer willingly paints on copper. The smooth surface allows for extremely fine lines, brilliant colors and an accumulation of details that stands the test of time. Its festivals, battles, biblical and mythological subjects can bring together dozens of figures, precious objects and even paintings represented inside the painting. This abundance does not does not mean disorder: groups, diagonals, zones of light and gestures constantly restart reading. The Fight of the Centaurs and the Lapiths condenses this energy. Human and animal bodies are knotted in a skillfully distributed melee, while metal, fabric and architecture multiply the contrasts of material. Platzer belongs to the world of cabinet paintings, designed to be looked at closely, taken up and discovered gradually. Returning to Eppan in the last years of his life, he died there in 1761. His work unites baroque erudition, rococo sensuality and almost miniaturist patience; the most important collection of his paintings is today preserved by the Alte Galerie du Joanneum in Graz. The "Johann Georg Platzer" selection notably compares The Fight of the Centaurs and the Lapiths. His reading favors color.
Platzer transforms the small format into an immense world: each centimeter opens an action, a metal, a fabric or a look that the eye discovers at its own pace.
