Johannes Lingelbach was born in Frankfurt in 1622. His family moved to Amsterdam when he was still young, placing his training at the heart of a very active artistic market. Around the 1640s, he traveled to France then Italy and stayed several years in Rome. There he joined the second generation of Bamboccianti, Nordic painters who represented markets, inns, workers, soldiers and small-scale street shows. Lingelbach observed the gestures, animals, costumes and circulation of public squares, but he organized these details in carefully composed architecture and landscapes. Returning to Amsterdam around 1650, he transformed his Italian studies into paintings intended for Dutch collectors. The Herb Market in Rome near the Capitol is not a strictly topographical view: ruins, stalls and crowds are recomposed to make the city more readable and more theatrical. Italian peasants drinking at the door of a hotel industry concentrates its interest in daily exchanges, while Scène de Bataille broadens the vocabulary of the crowd towards military tumult. The Rhine at Emmerich shows that he also knows how to apply his sense of movement to the landscapes of the North. The Rhine at Emmerich shows that he also knows how to apply his sense of movement to the landscapes of the North. Lingelbach is sought after as a painter of figures in the landscapes of other masters, notably Jan Hackaert, adding horsemen, travelers and herds who give scale and narrative. Died in Amsterdam in 1674, he linked Roman experience, popular observation and Dutch finishing in a profoundly European art. The "Johannes Lingelbach" selection notably compares The Herb Market in Rome near the Capitol and Italian Peasants drinking at the door of a hotel. His reading favors the story.
Lingelbach makes the crowd a geography: each peasant, rider, animal or merchant measures the place and transforms architecture into daily life.
