In the heart of Johannesburg, the JAG connects European painting, impressionist modernity, graphic arts and South African history in a large-scale civic collection.
The Johannesburg Art Gallery collection was established around 1910 thanks to the commitment of Florence Phillips and the advice of the dealer and curator Hugh Lane. It was first presented in a South African building School of Mines and Technology before joining the gallery built in Joubert Park. Designed by British architect Edwin Lutyens, the building opened to the public in 1915. Wings were added in the late 1930s, then one significant extension completed the museum in 1986 -1987. The collection today exceeds ten thousand works and covers several centuries. Dutch painting of the 17th century, British and European art of the 18th and 19th centuries, prints ancient, sculpture, modern art and contemporary creation rub shoulders with a major ensemble dedicated to southern Africa. This story is not neutral: born in the colonial society of the mining town, the institution gradually grew expanded his acquisitions and stories to better represent black artists and South African trajectories. The impressionist works chosen here illustrate the international openness of the initial collection. Monet's Spring makes vegetation and figures a luminous appearance. The Pissarro Forest builds space by touches and paths. The Argenteuil Regattas of Boudin connect water, sky and modern leisure activities. On the banks of the Loing de Sisley transforms finally an ordinary shore in light study. Gathered in Johannesburg, these European paintings dialogue with a local collection whose landscapes, cities, bodies and memories tell a much larger story.
