Born in Cornwall in 1761 and died in London in 1807, John Opie comes from a modest background. His early talent for drawing attracted the attention of the doctor and writer John Wolcot, who taught him the basics of painting from prints and his own collection. Opie developed a strong admiration for Rembrandt: chiaroscuro, visible material and truth without flattery became the foundations of his style. Wolcot built around him the story of a natural genius who remained away from academies, an artistic version of the "noble savage" which fascinated London.
