1858 -1930 · Australia and France, impressionism
Born in Sydney into a family of engineers, John Peter Russell chose painting after the death of his father and went to study at the Slade School in London. In Paris, the Cormon workshop allowed him to meet Vincent van Gogh, of whom he created a portrait that had become an adult in 1886. Russell also became involved with Auguste Rodin and discovered impressionism. His meeting with Claude Monet in Belle-Île-en-Mer reinforced his interest in changing light, divided touches and outdoor painting. Installed on the island from 1888 with Marianna Mattiocco, he devoted two decades to cliffs, waves, gardens and his family. He gradually favored pure pigments and contrasts powerful. In the 1890s, his exchanges with Henri Matisse helped to encourage him towards a freer color. The "John Peter Russell" selection offers its own journey on this subject. His reading favors figures.
In Russell, color does not cover the landscape: it becomes light, wind and the impact of the wave on the rock.
