José de Ribera gives the philosopher, the saint and the mythological condemned the same physical truth: skin, wrinkles, light and pain make thought as tangible as the body.
Born in Xàtiva in 1591, José de Ribera reached Italy at a very young age. Present in Parma in 1611 then in Rome, he settled permanently in Naples in 1616, in a city linked to the Spanish crown. Nicknamed Lo Spagnoletto, he became one of the great masters of Baroque naturalism. The Caravaggesque chiaroscuro of his beginnings models philosophers, apostles and saints from popular faces, rough fabrics and bodies observed without idealization. The tortures of Tityos and Ixion, painted in 1632 for the Buen Retiro Furies series, carry anatomy and pain on a monumental scale. But Ribera also knows how to paint the silence of Saint Jerome writing, the laughter of Democritus or the luminous dream from Jacob.
