Gibraltar -Málaga, 1866 -1918 · Romantic navy and history painting
José Gartner de la Pena was born in Gibraltar in 1866 and died in Malaga in 1918. Trained at the Malaga School of Fine Arts with the marinist Emilio Ocon, he stayed in England at the end of the 1880s and increased his studies there of sea. His marines are rewarded in numerous exhibitions, from Boston to Berlin, Brussels, Washington and Chicago. The Invencible, painted in 1892, is a panoramic oil on canvas measuring 130 × 420 cm. It evokes the destruction of the Spanish Armada of 1588: on the right, a large building is about to sink into a raging sea; the cliffs indicate a nearby coast. The painting combines romantic navy and history painting. The impastos of foreground gives the flow its violence, while the atmospheric glacis graduate the sky and the distance. Presented at the National Exhibition of 1892, the work earned Gartner a second medal. The "José Gartner" selection notably compares L’Invincible. His reading favors the atmosphere.
Gartner paints history without aligning heroes: the real protagonist is the sea, an immense force that defeats the fleet.
