Flemish precision, Provençal light and narrative emotion meet in the altarpieces of Josse Lieferinxe, former Master of Saint Sebastian.
Originally from Hainaut, in the diocese of Cambrai, Josse Lieferinxe was documented in Provence from 1493. Archives often designate him as a Picardy painter. Active in Marseille, Aix and in the orbit of Avignon, in 1503 he married Michèle Changenet, daughter of the painter Jean Changenet, whose workshop played a major role in artistic exchanges between Burgundy, Flanders, Italy and Provence. Lieferinxe directed his own workshop in Marseille no later than 1497. That year, he received with Bernardino Simondi the commission for an altarpiece dedicated to Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch for Notre-Dame-des-Accoules; the death of his partner led him to provide the essentials. Long grouped together under the name of Master of Saint Sebastian, these works helped rebuild his personality. The Calvary of the Parliament of Dijon brings together monumental pain, precise landscape and narrative crowd. The Visitation favors the meeting of figures, gesture and color. Its panels combine Nordic observation, Burgundian density and Mediterranean clarity on the threshold of the Renaissance.
