Józef Chełmoÿrski was born in 1849 in Boczki, Mazovia, and grew up in direct contact with the countryside. He studied at the Warsaw Drawing Class with Wojciech Gerson, then at the Munich Academy. The Polish artistic colony gathered around Józef Brandt and Maksymilian Gierymski strengthened his interest in horses, rural life and the landscapes of the East. His repeated trips to Ukraine revealed to him the immensity of the steppe and the power of the teams. Installed in Paris from 1875 to 1887, he enjoyed success with dynamic scenes intended for the international market. Czwórka, painted in 1881, launched four horses straight towards the viewer in a monumental composition. Back in Poland, Chełmoÿski focuses more on the silence of nature: storks, partridges, cranes, marshes, snow and seasonal light become his real subjects. The Storks combine peasant rest and sky observation; Partridge in the snow reduces the palette to make you feel the cold and the wind.
