Juan Bautista Maíno was born in Pastrana in 1581, the son of a Milanese merchant and a Portuguese woman. His training probably took place in Italy, especially in Rome, where he directly discovered the naturalism of Caravaggio, the classical clarity of the Carracci and the brilliant color of Orazio Gentileschi. Back in Spain, he worked in Toledo and in 1612 received the commission for the major altarpiece of San Pedro Martir. He entered the Dominican order the following year. Pentecost belongs to this group: monumental figures are arranged in a close space, saturated fabrics catch the light and individualized faces give the sacred event a concrete presence. Called to at court, Maïno became a drawing master of the future Philip IV and participated in the artistic debates of the palace. His preserved work is rare, around forty recognized paintings, but reveals a painter capable of uniting portrait, landscape, religious story and naturalist observation. Died in Madrid in 1649, he constitutes an essential link between Roman innovations of the early 17th century and great Spanish court painting.
