1614 -1685 · Avilés, Madrid, Alcazar and court of Charles II
Juan Carreño de Miranda was born in Avilés in 1614 and moved to Madrid at a young age. He trained with Pedro de las Cuevas then Bartolomé Român, whose taste for great religious composition he retained. His first decades were devoted to altarpieces and frescoes, often in collaboration with Francisco Rizi. The study of Titian, Rubens and Van Dyck gradually freed his touch, enriched his palette and gave the flesh a new warmth. Noticed by Velázquez, Carreño worked for the royal residences, becoming painter to the king in 1669 then painter to the chamber in 1671. His portraits of Charles II, Queen Mariana of Austria and court figures combine dignity official, physical truth and psychological depth. In religious subjects, Holy Family, Assumption or Immaculate Conception, the ascending movement, the golden light and the flexibility of the drapes carry baroque emotion. Carreño notably developed an influential type of the Immaculate, young and luminous. Died in Madrid in 1685, he transmitted to his students a broad and fluid manner which extended the great Golden Age to the threshold of a new era. The selection "Juan Carreño de Miranda" notably compares The Holy Family and The Assumption of the Virgin. His reading favors the material.
Carreño unites the pageantry of the court with the truth of the face, and religious fervor with free and luminous matter.
